Asset, Hobby and Trailer Tracking

You hitched the caravan up on Friday afternoon, drove down to a holiday house outside Hermanus, parked it under the carport and locked the gate. By Sunday it was gone. The neighbour saw a panel van around midnight, but nothing else. The insurer wants the police case number, the original purchase invoice, the security report from the body corporate and proof of an approved tracking device. You have two of the four. This is the gap that asset and trailer tracking is built to close, the gap between something disappearing and you being able to do anything about it before it ends up at a chop shop in Atlantis.

Direct answer

Asset, hobby and trailer tracking from TG Tracking puts a battery powered GPS device on the things you own that move occasionally and have no constant power source. Caravans, utility trailers, motorbikes, jet skis, quad bikes, e-bikes, boat trailers, work tools in a bakkie canopy, equipment at a holiday house. It runs for months to years on a single charge, alerts you on movement, and triggers a recovery workflow when a theft is confirmed. See Personal solutions for the full personal range, Car Tracking and Recovery for the daily-driver vehicle, and Wireless asset tracking for the underlying product line.

What the device actually does

A wireless asset tracker is a sealed, ruggedised GPS unit that you fit somewhere out of sight on the asset, magnetically or mechanically. There is no wiring. There is no need for a 12V power source. The device wakes up on motion, fixes its position, reports it back over a multi-network cellular SIM, and goes back to sleep. Static assets get a low-frequency check-in heartbeat. Moving assets get a higher-frequency stream until they stop again.

Long battery life by design

Battery life depends on how often the asset moves and how often you ask the device to report. A caravan parked at a holiday house for nine months a year sips power and lasts a long time on one charge. A utility trailer used three nights a week reports more often and lasts less long. Either way, replacement is a once-every-few-years job, not a weekly chore.

Movement, tow and tamper alerts

The device alerts on unauthorised motion, sustained towing, severe vibration that suggests the asset is being loaded into a vehicle, and any attempt to interfere with the unit. A geofence around the storage location fires the moment the asset crosses it, even if no ignition is involved.

Place and trace, not install and forget

Most owners fit the device themselves. Magnetically secured units stick to a frame in seconds. Concealed units take a few minutes to position somewhere a thief is not likely to look. The platform recognises the device the moment it powers on and the TG Mobile app shows the asset on the same map as your daily driver.

What you can actually track

The hardware is the same across categories. What changes is where the device sits and how the alerts are configured.

Trailers and caravans

Box trailers, flatbed utility trailers, custom-built game trailers, off-road camping trailers, full caravans. South African trailers move from the driveway often, are stolen often, and rarely have any electrical system to plug into. A battery powered tracker is the only realistic option.

Motorbikes, quad bikes and e-bikes

Motorbikes are stolen quickly, often on the back of another vehicle, and the chassis offers limited hiding spots for a wired device. Battery powered units sit out of sight, alert on motion, and do not affect the bike's electrical system or warranty. Quad bikes and e-bikes get the same treatment.

Boats, jet skis and outboards

A unit fitted inside a sealed compartment on a boat or jet ski survives moisture, vibration and the long periods of storage between uses. Trailers carrying watercraft are tracked separately because they get stolen on their own as often as with the boat.

Work equipment and tools

Bakkie canopies full of tools, generators dropped at construction sites, compressors, welders, plant equipment that lives outdoors at a depot, agricultural implements left in a field overnight. The same product line covers business asset use cases at scale; the personal version is sized for the equipment a single owner actually has.

Why TG Tracking for asset and trailer protection

The dollar-stretched approach to asset tracking is to buy a cheap battery tracker on Takealot, get an SMS when it moves, and hope that is enough. It is not. The value is not in the SMS. The value is in the chain that runs from the alert into a recovery outcome.

We sell that chain. The control room is in this country, picks up the phone when an alert escalates, and runs a recovery workflow with national recovery partners. The hardware is sized for South African conditions: dust, heat, humidity at the coast, vibration on gravel roads. The platform is the same one that runs business fleets, so a single owner gets the same operational backbone a 1 000-vehicle fleet gets, scaled appropriately. Cross-link to Car Tracking and Recovery and the household has a single account, single app, single login covering every asset it owns.

South African context, why this matters here

Trailer theft from suburban driveways is a near-weekly conversation in residential WhatsApp groups across Joburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and George. Caravan theft from holiday houses on the Garden Route, the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and the Cape West Coast spikes around long weekends and school holidays. Motorbikes lifted out of secure complexes in Sandton, Bryanston and Fourways are a documented pattern. Self-storage units in light-industrial areas are not the safe option many owners assume they are. Battery powered tracking does not stop any of this, but it does mean you find out within minutes rather than days, which is the difference between a recovery and a write-off.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the battery actually last?

Months to years on a single charge, depending on how often the asset moves and how often the device is configured to report. A caravan in long-term storage lasts longer than a utility trailer that moves three nights a week. Replacement is rare, not routine.

Do I need different devices for different assets?

The same wireless asset tracker covers most categories: trailers, caravans, motorbikes, jet skis, quad bikes, e-bikes, work tools and equipment. Specialised use cases like long-term marine deployment or high-vibration plant equipment may use a different model. We will recommend the right unit for what you own.

What about my car? Is this the same product?

No. Cars use a hardwired tracker drawing power from the vehicle. See Car Tracking and Recovery for the daily driver. The two products live on the same account inside the TG Mobile app, so a household sees its car, trailer, motorbike and jet ski on one map.

Will my insurer accept it for the trailer or caravan?

Most major South African insurers accept TG Tracking as approved tracking on caravans, trailers, motorbikes and other recreational assets, and the platform issues the certificate. Confirm with your broker, because the approved list varies and changes.

Can I use this for tools and equipment too?

Yes. The same device protects bakkie canopy tools, generators, welders and compressors at a personal scale. For business asset deployment at fleet scale, see Wireless asset tracking.

How quickly is a stolen trailer recovered?

The control room treats every confirmed theft as priority and works with national recovery partners. Recovery time depends on the speed of the alert, the accuracy of the location, and how close a recovery team is.

Does the device work if my caravan is parked under a metal carport?

GPS reception under a metal roof is reduced. The device still reports a position when the asset moves out from under the cover, and it still detects motion and tampering. For long-term storage under metal, we recommend positioning the device where it has at least partial sky view.

Protect what does not pay you back when it disappears

A trailer, a caravan, a motorbike or a jet ski only pays you back in the use you get out of it. Replacing one is paying twice for the same asset. Tracking it costs less per month than a tank of fuel.
