* Positioning accuracy specifications reflect ideal conditions. Device configuration, installation, environmental conditions, augmentation services, and many other factors may lead to variations in positioning accuracy.

** Battery life estimates are influenced by several factors including temperature, installation and orientation of the device, the frequency of location updates, network coverage, sensor integrations, peripherals, accelerometer settings, and more.

How it works

How a LoRaWAN deployment fits together

Every LoRaWAN deployment has four parts. Your devices report to a gateway, the gateway passes the messages to a network server, and the network server delivers the data to your application, such as TG Online.

01

Device

The tracker or sensor on your asset. It wakes, sends a small encrypted message and goes back to sleep. Because each message is small and infrequent, LoRaWAN devices can run for years on batteries.

02

Gateway

Mounted on a mast at your site and connected to the internet. It picks up device messages over roughly 10 to 20 km, depending on the site, and forwards them. It does not read the data.

03

Network server

Receives the messages, removes duplicates picked up by more than one gateway, decrypts them and passes them on. You can host your own or use a public network such as The Things Network.

04

Application

Where the data ends up: stored and displayed for you to use. That can be TG Online, or your own system.

Planning tip: an 8-channel gateway handles about one message per second, so 300 devices can each report roughly every five minutes. Talk to us about how many assets you have and how often they need to report before choosing hardware.

Choosing

When LoRaWAN is the right fit, and when it is not

Choose LoRaWAN when

  • Your site already has, or will have, a private LoRaWAN network with gateway coverage where the assets live.
  • Assets are many, stay inside private LoRaWAN coverage and need ultra-low power with multi-year battery life, so a small, infrequent position report is enough.
  • Data passes through a network server, your own or a public one, before it reaches TG Online.

Choose a cellular tracker when

  • Assets travel beyond your own network, on public roads or between sites.
  • You need frequent live positions or driver behaviour alerts.
  • There is no gateway coverage at the operating site and none planned.
Answers

LoRaWAN FAQs

How does LoRaWAN tracking work?

The tracker sends a small, encrypted position message by radio. A LoRaWAN gateway within range picks it up and forwards it to a network server, which removes duplicate copies, decrypts it and passes it to your application, such as TG Online, where you see positions and reports.

Do I need my own LoRaWAN network?

These devices need compatible LoRaWAN coverage where the assets operate: a LoRaWAN gateway within range that forwards their messages to a network server. The network server can be your own or a public one, such as The Things Network. Talk to us about your network and gateway setup before choosing hardware.

What does a gateway do, and how far does it reach?

A gateway receives messages from devices around it and forwards them over its internet connection to the network server. It does not read the data. Range is roughly 10 to 20 km, depending on the site.

How long do the batteries last?

With one location update a day, the Yabby3 LoRaWAN is rated for about 7 years and the Oyster3 LoRaWAN for 10 years or more. More frequent updates shorten battery life, and temperature, installation and network coverage also affect it. The G62 LoRaWAN runs on vehicle power, with a backup battery.

Which device suits my assets?

Yabby3 LoRaWAN is compact and battery powered for smaller assets. Oyster3 LoRaWAN is a rugged battery-powered unit with the longest battery life. G62 LoRaWAN is wired into vehicles and heavy equipment, with inputs and outputs, run hour monitoring and odometer readings.

Should I choose LoRaWAN or a cellular tracker?

LoRaWAN suits many assets that stay inside your own network coverage and only need small, infrequent position updates. Choose a cellular tracker when assets travel on public roads or between sites, when you need frequent live positions or driver behaviour alerts, or when there is no gateway coverage at the site.

Is the data secure?

Yes. Each device encrypts its messages with its own key, using AES-128 encryption on LoRaWAN networks.
