Door Monitoring

Our Yabby and Oyster 2 devices feature Jostle Mode Tracking – where accelerometer activity is used to detect trips/movement.

Open / Closed Door Monitoring

Often the ‘status’ (OPEN / CLOSED) of a door, window, gate, or any other object that opens and closes needs to be remotely monitored. Digital Matter devices with digital inputs can be paired with a reed switch to create a door sensor, monitoring whether a door is open or closed, and sending an alert if necessary.

Custom duration alerts can also be configured. It may not be of much interest if the door is simply opened or closed, but alerts may be needed if a door remains open for too long, particularly if security and/or temperature is a concern.

What is a Reed Switch?

A reed switch (electrical switch operated by a magnetic field) can be connected to one of the digital inputs of our Falcon device.

In the most basic form, the switch consists of flexible ferromagnetic metal contacts inside a sealed glass tube. When a magnet is brought close to the ‘reeds’, the reeds move so that they come into contact, closing the switch. You can often hear a slight click sound when this happens if you hold the switch to your ear.

Door Open / Close Monitoring with Battery-Powered Devices

In the case where no power source is available to monitor the open/closed door movements, a battery-powered device is required.

Our Yabby and Oyster 2 devices feature Jostle Mode Tracking – where accelerometer activity is used to detect trips/movement. When accelerometer activity is detected, a trip is started (e.g. movement/opening of a door) and we can set the device to upload for an alert. Then once it hasn’t moved for a while (timeout configurable) – the trip will end.
